TT: Tetanus Toxoid

TT stands for Tetanus Toxoid. It is a vaccination that protects against the tetanus virus. Tetanus is a severe illness that affects the nervous system. It is caused by a bacterium called Clostridiumtetani. The bacteria can enter the body via cut the skin, wounds, bites burns, and so on. They affect the nervous system and could cause serious problems should they be left untreated. The most common signs of the disease are convulsions, muscles spasms, lockjaws, stiffness and problems swallowing.

The vaccine was first developed in the 1920s and became an instant hit when it was used during World War II to protect the US army from the tetanus virus. Tetanus vaccination is recommended for all children, infants and adults.

The TT vaccine must be administered by a doctor or a health expert. Some of the side effects of this vaccine are swelling, fever, redness as well as tenderness, soreness etc.

The injection is also given to women who are pregnant to prevent neonatal tetanus. It produces antibodies in the body of the mother that is passed on to the child. It protects both mother and the child from tetanus.

TTT is the acronym for Tetanus Toxoid. TT also know as Tetanus vaccine can be described as an inactive vaccine that is used to prevent Tetanus. There are six doses must be administered which includes five doses during childhood and one at the age of adolescents. The booster dose of vaccination is recommendedif you or the patient suffers any cut from rusted iron material within 48 hours. After the first 3 doses, it is believed to be in the beginning immune. Pregnant women are usually given two doses to avoid the risk of Neonatal Tetanus which can happen due to the unhealed Umbilical Stump which is cut with unsterile instruments. Tetanus vaccine is given alone or in conjugation with other vaccines that include diphtheria, pertussis vaccines( DTaP ). Severe allergic reactions are noted in very few cases.

History:

The Antiserum of Tetanus was developed by a group of German researchers, who were led by 'Emil Von Behring' in the year 1890. However, the Tetanus Toxoid vaccine was prepared in the year 1924. It was originally made available to soldiers fighting in war. It is one of the most important vaccines that is regarded as the most secure in the health care system.

Tetanus Causative Agent and Symptoms:

Tetanus is caused by the bacterium clostridium Tetani. This is a disease affecting neuronal systems. The bacterium creates two exotoxins, one of which is a neurotoxin which causes manifestations of Tetanus.

The signs of Tetanus appear slowly. The first sign is apparent stiffness in your jaw( lockjaw ) as well as difficulty swallowing. It is then followed by fever, headache, and an increase of heart rate. The condition progresses to seizures and muscle spasms. These are the kind of activities that are typically observed in disorders of the nervous system. It is believed that the mortalityrate is higher for those in the age of 55 or over and also those who are not immunized before. The spasms continue for longer than 3 weeks and complete recovery may be a long time. It is not spread through contact with the infected person typically occurs when there is a virus since the causative factor of tetanus is a bacteria. The disease can take form if an open wound or cut comes into contact with the bacteria which allows for the introduction of the bacteria into the system. The time of incubation varies between 3 and 21 days.

Effectiveness of Tetanus Toxoid:

The TT vaccine has been proven that it is 100% efficient against Tetanus disease, as long as the first dose of vaccine is administered. The vaccination is offered in two kinds, passive and active. Active immunization for TT is suggested in infancy together with Diphtheria and Acellular Pertussis( DTaP ) at the age of 3 months, 6 months, 15-18 months, then at the age of 5-6 years. Next doses of Tdap is given between the ages of 10-12 years. Studies have proven that the vaccine can be effective for more than 10 years. The vaccine is available in Quadrivalent Pentavalent, Quadrivalent, and Hexavalent formulation with additional vaccines to prevent discomfort.

Mechanism of the Vaccine:

Tetanus needs active immunization, which produces artificial active immunity. The method of action is that it triggers active immunity through the injection of dead form of the disease. This triggers an immune system react and produce antibodies. This is beneficial in the latter stages of life since our immune system can act immediately if the disease enters the body later by producing antibodies in response to the antigen.

The vaccination is needed in the period of gestation because it allows the foetus to get the antibody. The vaccination is administered between 26 and 36 weeks of gestational period.
